TMJ jaw massage

Specialist massage techniques for treating jaw pain and TMJ disorder (TMD)

You move your jaw (the temporomandibular joint — or TMJ) more than any other joint in your body. Every time you open and close your mouth to speak, chew or yawn, the muscles around your jaw are working. Many people also clench their teeth when they’re stressed, or grind at night (bruxism), which adds more tension to the jaw muscles.

TMJ disorder or dysfunction (sometimes called TMD or TMJD) can manifest as pain or discomfort in the jaw, teeth, face or ears, and it’s also linked to headaches and migraines. You might hear clicking or popping noises when you open and close your jaw, feel like your ears are blocked, or hear ringing (tinnitus). In some cases, the jaw can ‘lock’ and prevent the mouth from opening wide (trismus).

But manual therapy to the muscles and fascia around the jaw can effectively release tension and reduce symptoms.

This treatment includes specialist intra-oral massage techniques to access the muscles inside your mouth (wearing medical examination gloves for hygiene) along with massage for the head, neck and shoulders.

Everything is connected, so we’ll take a holistic approach that considers all of you and explores what else might be contributing to your jaw problems. Based on your consultation, your personalised treatment may also include massage for other parts of your body, or techniques to support your nervous system and promote relaxation.
